A while ago I ordered from Gallo’s online store, Torikoshi Hyakkaten, for the first time. The store is on Japanese online marketplace Base, which unfortunately doesn’t accept credit cards issued outside Japan. However, Torikoshi Hyakkaten accepts Paypal when you place an order by email instead of using the shopping cart, and there’s a helpful guide on their about page on ordering from overseas.
The only shipping option available is EMS and it’s flat-rate shipping for different areas of the world (it was ¥2700 to Europe), so it can be a bit expensive, especially if you’re only buying a few items. The store also didn’t mark the package as a gift/personal effects or mark down the value, I wasn’t expecting them to do that as it’s pretty standard for stores not to, but that did mean I was charged a customs fee, so that’s something else to be prepared for if you order from the store.
I’d definitely recommend Torikoshi Hyakkaten. They were very polite and replied to emails very quickly, the items were safely packaged, and they also included a free flyer!
On to the items!
First up, I ordered the dish and spoon set. Now I’m officially ready for a Gallo live!
There are 2 designs – the emblem (in large and medium), and the weathervane. I got the large emblem design. I was worried about the dish getting easily damaged or breaking, so I was glad to see on the website it was made of hard plastic (polypropylene to be exact). The spoon is stainless steel. I haven’t decided if I want to actually use them, or just keep them for display, since it will be a while before I’m able to go to a Gallo live and use them for furitsuke.
I also ordered the January monthly cheki. There’s often store-exclusive cheki, including monthly cheki which often has a theme related to that month. I missed out on the November monthly cheki (suits), and also December (¥1500 for a set of 5 cheki from 2016), so I was really happy I was able to get the January cheki! The theme for the January monthly cheki was hakama, and like previous store-exclusive cheki, the samples on the site showed that you could get 2-shot cheki! I bought 5 cheki, and I thought it would be nice if I was lucky to get 2-shot cheki, and I was hoping to get all 5 members. But even if I didn’t, I was hoping to at least get my favourite members, JoJo and Wajow!
JoJo was at the top, so instantly I was very happy! As I went through the other cheki one by one, it looked like I’d gotten 1 of each member, but I was still a little worried, especially as there hadn’t been any Wajow yet. But his cheki was at the bottom, phew! So I didn’t get any 2-shot cheki, but I got my favourite members, and I actually got cheki of all 5 members, so I’m very happy with the cheki I got! I wonder if the store picks cheki randomly, or they’ll try to send all 5 members if you buy 5 or more cheki?
I also did an unboxing video on my YouTube channel:
